Haoguo Chen, 26

Admired for his “special tone quality with immensely powerful energy” (China Central Television), Haoguo Chen is a pianist concertising nationally and internationally, including in Poland, China, and the USA. As a concert soloist, Haoguo made his first public debut when he was 10. His successful and inspiring solo recital debut led him to play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Central Conservatory Orchestra in Beijing and offer a recital tour in five major cities in China. Haoguo has performed extensively as a recitalist since he was 12 years old, with a substantial programme. When he was 15 years old, he started giving recitals with the complete Chopin 24 études. His concert tour with the China Philharmonic Orchestra on Gao Wei-jie's “Memory of the Childhood” was highly praised by the media and performed in major cities in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Wuxi, Zhengzhou, Gulangyu, Shanxi, Suzhou, and Nanning), the USA (New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Seattle, Boston, and Aspen), and Poland (Weimar, Katowice, Radziejowice, and Bydgoszcz).

With his unparalleled control of tonal palette, Haoguo has won First Prize at the Caddansa and Palatianu Competitions in China, China Central Television Piano and Violin Competition, and the New Year International Piano Competition in 2008. He also won the Chicago International Concerto Competition in 2013, the Concert Competition at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2019, and performed Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand with the CIM Orchestra. Haoguo has been a distinguished guest and participant in numerous music festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival, Radziejowice Music Festival, Katowice Music Festival, and the Weimar Music Festival.

Apart from performing as a pianist, Haoguo is a talented composer. He has written two sonatas for violin and piano, two piano pieces for the left hand, one symphony, and one piano cycle. His piano piece “Cloud's Vision” and symphony “Past Vision” were premiered and actively performed at the Juilliard School. The compositions will be officially published next spring.

Haoguo is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree with Sergei Babayan at the Juilliard School. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. His principal teachers also include Matti Raekallio and Hungkuan Chen in the Juilliard Pre-College programme.
